Position Description
Will perform technical writing and editing tasks for scientific or technical documents in prescribed formats. Will/may write and develop scientific or technical documents; edit documents (including editing figures and tables) for language, format, and style (including electronic page layout of text, figures, and tables in documents); and prepare documents for hard copy printing and/or electronic publication. Will ensure that collaborative documents are consistent and appear as parts of one cohesive document to the reader. May collaborate with other technical writers, editors, illustrators, authors, subject matter experts, scientific or research staff, and information technology or other production staff. Subject areas typically involve endangered species, fisheries management, environmental contaminants, and conservation of fish and sea mammal species.

Required Skills
Two to four years experience with writing, editing and formatting scientific/technical documents. Must be able to address multiple types of audiences (of varying levels of scientific knowledge) such as specialized scientific audiences, interdisciplinary audiences including scientists or technicians, and a wider audience that may include governmental policy makers, natural resource managers, and interested laypersons. Knowledge of PC systems with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office Programs, especially Word (including the table function and formatting for styles). Proven ability to process large manuscripts with complex editing and formatting issues and many figures and tables. Experience with FrameMaker, Acrobat, and other Adobe software, and Section 508 compliance, highly desirable. A background in basic biology or natural resource issues a real plus.

Education
BS/BA degree in related discipline preferred.
